Postpartum Call to Action

Dear Reader,

We are excited to announce the publication of our Call to Action titled "Postpartum: A Critical Window in Women’s Health." This landmark initiative aims to transform the landscape of postpartum care, emphasizing its vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of mothers, babies, families, and communities globally.

Many of you participated in the Dialogue Forums and the Discussion Groups during the Postnatal rEvolution Summit – this call is the outcome of all these conversations, and we thank you. The Well Supported Mothers Collective joined hands with the Postnatal Support Network and contributed immensely to the completion of the Call to Action draft. We cannot thank them enough.

What Does Our Call to Action Entail?

Our vision is clear: to establish postpartum care as a global standard of comprehensive support, ensuring that every woman emerges from this critical period physically healthy, mentally resilient, emotionally connected, and socially supported. Our mission focuses on the necessary reforms to current postpartum standards, which have proven to be insufficient in meeting the diverse needs of mothers and families. The alarming rise in preventable, life-altering postpartum outcomes calls for immediate attention and systemic change.

Key Calls to Action Include:

  • Establishing comprehensive continuity of clinical health care for postpartum women.
  • Integrating support from prenatal through at least one year postpartum, addressing both physical and mental health.
  • Elevating mental health as a priority, with the development of supportive services for mothers experiencing postpartum challenges.
  • Launching public awareness campaigns to normalize discussions around postpartum experiences. - Creating accessible local support networks and fostering intergenerational collaboration.
  • Advocating for improved maternity leave policies that support new mothers.
  • Investing in research to assess postpartum care impacts and effectiveness.

Why Is This Important?

The postpartum period represents a critical, yet often overlooked, window in women's health. Societal stigma and lack of comprehensive support leave many new mothers isolated and vulnerable. We must change this narrative. Our Call to Action seeks to initiate a transformative shift in postpartum care, prioritizing maternal health and recognizing the first year as pivotal for both mothers and their children. Read More
